With an island outline sketch opposite title-page. Contains a title-page, being the first of 32 otherwise plain blue paper leaves, the last of which with handwritten text “England 8,5 R.A.F. hours” and an arrow pointing towards the front of the book, then 8 leaves with photos and graphics, then another 32 plain blue paper leaves, the first of which with the manuscript text “Falklands 8,5 R.A.F.-hours” and an arrow pointing towards the end of the book, the last verso being the printed colophon. On his way to to the Falklands, Frans Baake had a short stop-over on Ascension Island. He did not see a lot during his brief visit, as you can see in this book. Images from the island are captured in Atlantic blue pages. Pictures from an isolated spot between England and the Falklands, 8 ½ R.A.F. -hours from each destination. - ADDED: an assumed proof copy of the same work (somewhat imperfect, without colophon). During his travels, Frans Baake makes sketches, photos and notes. The journey is then translated into a work of art, namely an artist's book, which he publishes himself in a small edition. In artists' books, the image usually dominates. The countless artist books that Baake has made are full of photos, woodcuts, linocuts, screenprints, collages and texts. The books are not literally about his travels and are therefore not comparable to the way we make our photo album or diary after a holiday. Baake’s way of working is similar in general: he prepares for his voyage, at the actual trip he will make drawings, writings, photographs; in his studio back home these together with his thoughts and ideas will be transformed into books, prints, sketches, portfolios, articles. |
