Report of the politician and author Étienne de Jouy (1764-1846) and the lawyer and journalist Antoine Jay (1770-1854) in Sainte-Pelagie Prison. They were imprisoned for an allegedly anti-royalist article. They wrote not only about their own experiences but also about the fates of their fellow inmates.The second volume contains almost 100 pages about the New York City Penitentiary; the work also includes chapters on stoicism, the daily routine in the prison, regulations, schedule of visits, and much more. The 31 "Vertroostingen" [consolations] are numbered and dated like chapters; Volume 2 also includes an appendix entitled "Regtsgeding" [lawsuit] including the pleadings of Jouet's and Jay's defense attorneys, as well as their own statements in court. |
