Misnumbered after page 161 (recto), the verso is numbered 168 - which is corrected on page (183) by continuing with 177. Eugène Vidocq was an adventurer and detective who helped establish the 'secret police' in France and is considered the father of modern criminology and the first private detective. The mysteries he creates are largely fictional and are considered the first detective stories. It is believed that Vidocq inspired Edgar Allan Poe to create the first fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin, who appeared in what is also considered one of the first detective stories ever: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" (1841). His character also influenced writers such as Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, Eugène Sue and Alexandre Dumas père. In 1832, Vidocq was dismissed from the 'Sureté Nationale' for a theft he allegedly organized. He founded a police agency, the 'Police de Sûreté', the prototype of modern detective agencies. |
