| Meer info | = First edition of these important and interesting memoirs which correspond to the papers that Barras had bequeathed to Rousselin de Saint-Albin and which the latter had decided not to publish. Attractively bound set. Barras is one of the leading and most controversial figures of the Revolution and the Empire: a regicide member of the Convention, close to Bonaparte from the siege of Toulon, appointed general commanding the armies of Paris to suppress Robespierre and his party, then, later, the royalist insurrection of 13 Vendémiaire Year IV with the help of Bonaparte, he was elected Director on October 31, 1795. Deemed too dangerous by Napoleon, he was removed from political life under the Consulate and the Empire. The publication of his memoirs was very controversial. On this subject, one should read the long notice by Jean Tulard (no. 82 of his bibliography) as well as the article by Biré in the Mémoires et Souvenirs (III, 83-102). |
