| Meer info | = With the owner's entry of William R. Highmore (1773). William Temple was a 17th-century English writer who produced a range of works, most of which took the form of essays on politics, reflections on England’s history, and personal memoirs. Although many of his writings were relatively brief, one of his most significant works is "Observations upon the United Provinces of the Netherlands". In this book, Temple examines the rise and development of the Netherlands, discussing its government, culture and customs, religious tendencies, trade, and commerce, along with commentary on its eventual devastation during the war with France in 1672. The volume also contains a second edition of Temple’s "Memoirs of What Past in Christendom", which recounts events surrounding the Franco-Dutch War and the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Notably, this work was completed with the assistance of Jonathan Swift, who was serving as Temple’s secretary at the time. Endpapers cut short and with mounted old catalogue-clipping; first blank w. 20th cent. bookplate. Title-shield defective. |
