| Meer info | - Impressive set. Contents very fine. Volumes 1, 6 and 7 upper vellum over joint split(ting), but holding tight. Other volumes lower joint starting. Volume 3 vellum over spine partly defective. This being the first 'modern' edition of Calvin's massive complete works, it remained the definite scholarly edition for two centuries, when the Strasbourg edition of Baum, Cunitz and Reuss appeared (1863-1900). Divided into nine volumes, the first seven contain his commentaries on the Bible, the eighth volume contains his theological works and the final volume with his Institutes and letters. With a collective titlepage in volume one, dated 1671 all other volumes with their own titlepages, dated 1667. (total 9). Contents: I. Continet commentaria in Pentateuchum, et librum Josuae; II. Homilias in Samuelem, et conciones in Jobum; III. Commentaria in Psalmos, & Isaiam; IV. Praelectiones in Jeremiam, et Ezechielem; V. Praelectiones in Danielem, et Prophetas majores; VI. Commentaria in Euangelia, et Acta Apostolorum; VII. Commentaria in Epistolas Pauli et Canonicas; VIII. Opuscula varia theologica; IX. Institutiones religionis Christianae, quibus subjunguntur Epistolae et responsa ad diversos.Calvin was a theologian and ecclesiastical statesman and his influence on western society can hardly be overestimated. He was the leading French Protestant reformer and the most important figure in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. His interpretation of Christianity, advanced above all in his Institutio Christianae religionis (1536 but elaborated in later editions; Institutes of the Christian Religion), and the institutional and social patterns he worked out for Geneva deeply influenced Protestantism elsewhere in Europe and in North America. The Calvinist form of Protestantism is widely thought to have had a major impact on the formation of the modern world. |
