| Meer info | = Charming Coptic manuscript in a fine binding, probably a religious or talismanic work. This type of manuscript is deeply rooted in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and is often made by dabtaras, non-ordained religious scholars. The human figures in the miniatures are painted in the typical style for Ethiopian Christian Orthodox art, with big, almond-shaped eyes that symbolise vigilence and spiritual alertness. The colours used for the paintings are typically in red, yellow, green and black, made of natural pigments and painted on vellum. Historically, this type of scroll was used for personal protection, healing illnesses, or warding off evil spirits or the 'evil eye'. They were often, like this example, written by hand, decorated, and illustrated by traditional healers or unordained priests. The first image depicts an archangel with swords to combat evil. Text in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of Ethiopia. Normal traces of use. A torn off section and a tear are repaired in traditional style (sewn in place again with the use of a thread). |
