With a dedication by the translator, John Walrond Walrond (1818-1889), MP for Tiverton and High Sheriff of Devon, to his daughter, Mary Holbech, ‘from her loving/ ‘Pater’/ The Translator/ Aug. 1886'.’ The text was corrected in many places, sometimes by inserted corrections in ink, sometimes with pasted-in strips of text, always closely mimicking the printed lettering. On p. ix for instance a correcting piece of 7 lines, in a purple mimeo-like technique, was pasted in over the text. Possibly this is a deluxe copy on its expensive Whatman paper and with its gilt and black-blocked binding decoration. Endearing! |
