This dissertation is a thorough historic law study of the trials by 'grietman' (rural judge) De Mepsche in 1731-1732. With a biography, an extensive description of the various lawsuits, an accurate estimate of the costs De Mepsche had to pay for the maintenance of the prisoners in his dungeons (which in the end drove him to bankruptcy), and an assessment of the legal validity of his procedures - and De Mepsche conducted trials from his first day as a judge to his last breath. A voluminous but very clear study by a clear head: talented Gerard Matthijs Cohen Tervaert (1895-1940), grandson of the painter Jozef Israëls, was much praised as a student of Latin law, but also as a young public prosecutor. |
