Dark green cloth boards with gilt titles front and spine. This copy is ex library of Ph.C. Visser (1882 – 1955), the well-known Dutch Karakoram explorer. Together with his wife and several Swiss guides he organized four expeditions in the period 1922 – 1935. Several unknown and never before explored valleys were entered and mapped. His signature and numbers corresponding to his library catalogue are on the f.e.p. Content is in very nice condition without tears, markings or folds. All maps and plates are accounted for and in fine condition. Page edges uncut. Sl. foxing to a few pages and to the fore edges, as may be expected in this publication of 100 years ago. Rear board was influenced by damp (see image). Binding is secure and boards are square. A very nice, remarkable near fine copy. This is the story of the third pre-Second World War British expedition to Everest, written by the surviving members of the team. Includes an account by Noel Odell of the disappearance of George Leigh Mallory and Andrew Irvine on the Northeast Ridge. Also contains the letters George Mallory sent to his wife from the expedition, as well as essays of physiology, natural history, geology, oxygen, photography and suggestions for future expeditions. As well included in this copy is a postcard sent by the expedition to mr. W. Vollkamper (?) in Amsterdam. Stamped at Calcutta dated 16 October 1924. (see images). Included is as well a handwritten presentation note from the publisher to mr. Ph.C. Visser dated 23 February 1926 (see images). |
