Illustrated with a woodcut city crests on each titlepage, some lovely decorative initials and tail pieces, a fold out map of Gouda (with a small paper restoration to the margin), an engraving depicting city hall (A. Lepelaar delinea vit.), an engraving depicting the city castle, an engraving depicting the Janskerk (with some tears along the folds) and a large fold out engraving (34x48 cm) depicting the interior of the Janskerk (with a tear on the left, A. Lepelaer ad vivum delineavit, J. Goeree Sculp.). This last engraving is an addition that doesn't seem to be present in all copies. Lit: Nijhoff & Van Hattum 317. The author, Ignatius Walvis (1653-1714) was a Catholic pastor in Gouda. On the titlepages he is mentioned as J.W., but his name is revealed in some poems by J. v. H., Chr. Pierson, W. Hornius, F. v.
