Annotated in pen lower right: "illustratie by Hildebrands Veerschipper", indicating that this was meant as an illustration for Hildebrand's (ps. for Nicolaas Beets) short story 'De Veerschipper' (The skipper) in the well-known work Camera Obscura (first published in 1839). The illustration refers to the moment where skipper Rietheuvel tries to fool a somewhat conceited lady. l Pen and brown ink over pencil on paper, 132 x 210 mm. Slight browning and few small foxing spots along the edges, upper right corner and a small spot on the lower left slightly damaged. |
