His grandfather, Johannes Maritz I (1680-1743) invented the vertical drilling machine, as well as the horizontal drilling machine for cannons in the 18th century. These inventions revolutionized cannon-making. Johann Maritz III was educated in Barcelona by his uncle Johann Maritz II (1712-1790). In 1770 he was offered a position by Cathatina II of Russia ánd by Willem V of Holland. Het took the offer to come to Holland and became head of the canon foundry (geschutgieterij) in Den Haag until his death in 1807. This handwritten document seems to be a testimony of good conduct with references to the inventions made by his family. It is dated to 30 December 1768, Stattschreibereij Burgdorff. Another date referred to is 27 September 1721.Single folded sheet, 34x21 cm, with fold lines and writing on alle four sides, with embossed Burgdorff seal.
