| Meer info | Portrait of Maximilian IMaximilian I (1459-1519) was King of the Romans from 1486 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death in 1519. Although he was never crowned by the Pope (his journey to Rome was blocked by the Venetians), he proclaimed himself elected emperor in 1508 at Trent, breaking in this way the long tradition of requiring a papal coronation for the adoption of the Imperial title. Maximilian was the only surviving son of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, and Eleanor of Portugal. Etching and engraving on hand laid paper, sheet size 372 x 458 mm., platemark 361 x 446 mm., engraved by Pieter van Sompel (c. 1600-c. 1644) after Pieter Soutman (c. 1580-1657), and published by Soutman, dated 1644.In fair condition, complete, but with a heavy dampstain in the lower left corner (covering part of the border and caption), some horizontal creasing in the image area.Reference: Hollstein Dutch 212: 21 (ii/4) |
