The Rotterdam city quarter of Spangen was named after the castle.The top view shows the castle as it stood, the lower view shows the castle in ruins. 16 coats of arms on either side of the views, on the left the Spangen side of the family, on the right the Bongart branch. Above the views the combined coat of arms of the Spangen and Bongart families, and two allegorical scenes. On the left an architect who shows a floor plan to a queen. On the right a lady who draws the Spangen coat of arms on a shield.Etching on hand laid paper, signed by I. Baudouin as the printmaker. The design is attributed to Jacob Lois. Sheet size 227 x 290 mm., platemark 210 x 263 mm., published in 1730, as part of 'Le grand théâtre profane du Duché de Brabant' (The Hague: Chrétien van Lom, 1730).In very good condition, with a very faint crease from the top margin a little into the image area. |
