Made by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, and published in the Houtsnedenummer (Woodcut issue) of the famous periodical Wendingen in 1919 (year 2, nr. 7/8). It was printed by De Volharding and published by De Hooge Brug.Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (Amsterdam 1868-1942 Auschwitz) was a Dutch graphic artist active in the years before the Second World War. Being Jewish, in his old age he was sent to Auschwitz by the Nazis, where he was gassed along with his wife. Before the war he was teacher as well as an artist, and among many others, taught M.C. Escher. In very good condition, despite the very fragile paper. The right edge faintly browned (not affecting image). |
