He was a descendant of the House of Grey and the namesake of Earl Grey tea. Steel engraving on wove paper, sheet size 242 x 152 mm., platemark 176 x 115 mm. Engraved by Johann Georg Nordheim after Sir Thomas Lawrence. Published by Carl Mayer in Nurnberg, in: Meyer, Joseph. Conversations-Lexikon für die gebildeten Stände, published between 1840-1855. Johann Georg Nordheim (Gehaus 1804-1854 Hildburghausen) was a German reproductive engraver and steel engraver, who engraved numerous portraits. Sir Thomas Lawrence (Bristol 1769-1830 London) was an English painter in pastels, watercolours and gouache, print collector and court painter. In good condition. A faint dampstain in the right margin edge. Some faint foxing and soiling in the margin edges, image area clean. |
