Graphology is something we feel instinctively: we quickly sense the identity of a correspondent from the writing on the envelope. A large, awkward hand is a sure sigh of a child, just as much as a hesitant, trembling hand indicates an old person; while bizarre letters with lots of flourishes are the work of a pretentious person. The role of graphology has been to develop and refine these observations. One of the commonest objections to graphology is that everyone can vary his handwriting in an infinite variety of ways. Yet, if one examines closely various specimens of a person's hand, one is forced to the conclusion that such changes are only apparent, and that the basic features remain the same. Another claim is that it is easy to disguise one's handwriting, and thus hide its nature from the searching eye of the graphologist. Here again, a keen observer will find the same basic features." |
