While the author does drone on a lot about megaliths all over Europe in the first half, without too much in the way of new idea, this is merely to set the stage for what is to follow. I believe this book must have been a rewritten thesis. Each argument solidly backed by presented evidence in the previous chapter. The author even explains Marx having argued his case of humans 'changing' (Lemarkism), and forgetting capitalism once the environment switches to socialism, abandoning human nature, as a prelude to arguing whether or not the evolution of megalithic society can be explained by Lemarkist or Darwinist means (megalith builders as a hybrid species of earlier farmer and newcoming elite); hybrid species supposedly producing more energetic offspring. I've read stacks of books on Stonehenge and megaliths and none or few dare to think independently in terms of suggesting, as this does, that the so-called neolithic communal barrows were in fact tombs for elite dynasties. The author even suggests the racial similarity of the skulls across England and Scotland, even in communal burials suggest one race/tribe across Britain. Fascinating considering other ideas elucidated in such works as 'Stonehenge of the Kings' in which the great age of Arthur was around the time of Stonehenge's construction: an early British empire perhaps. |
