| Meer info | Sid Grauman was one of the pioneers of the atmospheric cinemas of the 1920s.this book claims that he invented prologues.I have also seen that claim made for "Roxy"Rothapfel.He ran,amomgst others the Million Dollar Theatre in downtown LA,recently reopened,the Egyptian Theatre,open,but rebuilt after earthquake damage,and the most famousthe Chinese Theatre.Having visited the later two I was very disappointed at the photos in this book.There is a colour section.,the majority of which are artist's impressions.There is but one colour photo of the interior which does not show the interior in its full glory.What a shame.\the story is interesting particularly about prrologues.These lasted from the mid 1920s for about 10 years.If you watch "Footlight Parade" starring James Cagney and made in 1934 you will get an idea as to what they were like.Though even in the film it is admitted that they are dying and that double features will replace them.They became too expensive to mount and the public lost interest |
