This is a book that makes sense of the pastoral epistles by dating them relatively early and seeing the purpose of 1 Timothy in the mission given to Timothy to rebut the erroneous teaching into which the Ephesian church was falling. Occasionally opinionated but not weighed down by excessive reference to earlier commentators, Kelly uses his linguistic skills and huge knowledge of patristic writings to show how the case for genuine Pauline authorship is strong and better than any pseudonymous theories. Kelly is particularly good on the implications for church government of the text and perhaps his own early years in the Presbyterian church gave him insight into the dynamic situation in the Pauline era and before monarchical bishops emerged. So, yes, this is a convincing (but not polemical) piece of writing and a thorough piece of exegesis. |
