In fact, other books frequently start where this one leaves off. This book attempts to provide a solid theoretical foundation from which a more technical treatment of education can follow. Not all statements in the book are scientific in a narrow sense. The first five chapters are designed to introduce the reader to the life and world of deafness in the United States. These chapters were written from a personal perspective based on observations of and reasearch about deaf people for the past fifteen years.
