This unmatched series of facsimiles, originally published in a limited edition of 150 copies, is now unobtainable on the book market. Professor Slive of Harvard has written the introduction and edited this Dover collection. His informative comments, which accompany each of the 550 drawings, incorporate the results of recent research on problems of attribution, chronology and iconography. He has also prepared biographical notes, bibliographical data and concordances with various other Rembrandt drawing catalogues. Special indexes of collections, subjects, and of Rembrandt's pupils and followers are included. Every effort has been made to capture the quality of Rembrandt's drawings in the plates of the volumes, and in the few instances where the original facsimiles were not considered adequate, reproductions were made from new photographs. |
