| Meer info | Sixty years ago members of an Australian prospecting expedition became the first Whites to enter the Wahgi Valley in the New Guinea Highlands. Received as returning ghosts, the intruders initiated what the author describes as a 'crash course in modernity' for the Wahgi. One consequence was that the Wahgi became the object of anthropological study and their artefacts were exhibited in museum collections. This innovative book is both a history of that 'crash course' and a record of the author's own experiences in making a collection of Wahgi artefacts. in the last chapter, Dr O'Hanlon also reflects on the process of using that collection to portray Wahgi culture to metropolitan exhibition-goers. Dr Michael O'Hanlon is an Assistant Keeper in the Museum of Mankind, the Britich Museum's Department of Ethnography. He is the author of Reading the Skin: adornment, display society among the Wahgi. |
