| Meer info | Interesting literary attack on republicanism, Mary Wollstonecraft, and William Godwin, written as a series of letters. Fiction at this time was frequently used as a propaganda material, both by the “New Philosophy” authors, and by their critics. These pseudo-letters, first appearing in the NY “Commercial Advertiser” of 1801, were written by Silliman (1779-1864) in support of the Federalist Party’s campaign. The book is dedicated to John Quincy Adams. Silliman, later a Yale professor, was the first to distill petroleum in America. The work is a reflection on the early concept of women's rights, almost non-existent at the time; American poetry; and the American landscape; as well as being notable for its commentary on Hindu poetry and the Song of Solomon. Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), the 18th century British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, is critiqued here. “She seriously discards all that sexual tenderness, delicacy and modesty, which constitute the female loveliness”. A further letter critiques horse-riding and skating as inappropriate. Overall, this book presents an interesting satirical response to the “New Philosophy”. |
