| Meer info | Just a few days after the end of the war, on May 8, 1945, the Minister of Justice published the War Foster Children Decree. Responsibility for the Jewish foster children fell to the National Commission for War Foster Children (OPK). About 4,000 Jewish children were registered with this committee, including about 1,370 orphans. I was one of them. I owe my life to people from the resistance. I don't think it was a good thing that the OPK was also led by these people. They did not have sufficient in-house expertise to represent the interests of these orphans when it came to determining their identity. The Jewish members were in the minority in the committee, as a result of which OPK too often advised the Court to leave the guardianship of the Jewish orphans with the non-Jewish families where they went into hiding during the war. When I received my OPK file at the end of 1980, after studying it I came to the conclusion that my identity had been determined in a careless, perhaps even lazy, manner.
