| Meer info | Chronicles of the Great War is really a photographic history of World War One. There is also informative accompanying text, but the photographs take up the larger proportion of the pages. The photographs are all numbered and are easily referenced by the number to the notes describing each photograph. Interestingly, war photography during this period does not include many phtographs of actual combat, particularly close combat. Photography still being in its relative infancy and the perilous nature of raising ones head above a trench, probably account for this. The reader is presented with hundreds of photographs which serve to give a sense of what it was like for the soldiers during World War One. There are very few diagrams in this book. For a more detailed look at World War One in a similar format check out The "Historical Atlas of World War I" by Anthony Livesey, H. P. Willmott (Editor). "Chronicles of the Great War" is an interesting read but is not as comprehensive as the "Historical Atlas of World War I". Like all books on 'The Great War' this one however conveys the horror of trench warfare and terrible suffering endured by the soldiers. On that theme you may wish to read "Fields of Memory: A Testimony to the Great War by Anne Roze". Recommended, but more detailed books are available. |
