Meer info Management of Aquifer Recharge for Sustainability describes the processes already in use and those being developed to intentionally enhance the quality and quantity of groundwater resources. Known in the past as 'artificial recharge', methods include harvesting stormwater runoff, reclaimed water as well as drinking water supplies and storing these in aquifers. Methods include infiltration from ponds, channels and galleries, river and lake bank filtration, injection of water into wells, detaining ephemeral flows in water spreading dams, percolation tanks, and subsurface dykes, together with a growing range of extensions and combinations at different scales. This volume of papers focuses on the sustainability of managed recharge, addressing such issues as clogging, geochemical changes, fate of pathogens and trace organics, recovery efficiency, environmental and public health issues, as well as economic and regulatory aspects. Numerous case studies cover the range of methods, issues and technology development and demonstrate the variety of adaptations to suit local needs and conditions.
This volume represents a significant step towards developing sustainable systems for enhancing and protecting groundwater resources. Its unique contribution is in advancing sustainability of water resources in arid and semi-arid areas with unconventional water sources such as stormwater and reclaimed water. 100 papers from the 4th International Symposium on Artificial Recharge of Groundwater are contained in this volume representing research and practice in 20 countries. Many of these papers emphasise the emerging understanding of subsurface processes that is necessary to enable recharge systems to be appropriately located and better designed and managed. Learn all about the state of the art in a range of methods including bank filtration, aquifer storage and recovery and soil aquifer treatment, while advancing our understanding of traditional systems and demonstrating techniques to improve efficiency. This is essential reading for water resources managers and water supply utilities in water scarce areas and where aquifers are used to improve the quality and security of drinking water and agricultural water supplies.
