| Meer info | ABOUT 250 YEARS separate the lives and times of two remarkable Jewish women: Gliickel of Hameln, Germany, born in 1646; and Beile Hinde, born in Lithuania, the cradle of Jewish learning and culture, in 1896. In their later years each wrote about personal experiences and memories—as Jewish women, and, indeed, as the chroniclers of their times. Glückel's book was sub-titled: Written by Herself; and so was Beile Hinde's deeply moving story, written by herself. Gliickel has been reprinted and translated many times, and is now considered a classic of personal Jewish history. Beile Hinde (Bella Lown) will become a classic because of her equally descriptive views of shtetl life during the first half of the 20th century. In her 95th year, in 1991, she looked back to the images that she clearly recalled as being "etched before my eyes." Her warm, personal remembrances of a vibrant Jewish culture will transport the reader into that time and place of shtetl life completely surrounded by the calendar-seasons of Jewish holidays and their inviolable sabbaths, together with scents of the special foods prepared for each different holiday. All this ended when the turbulence and violence of wars, pestilence, and pogroms, pushed the Jews into flight from one place to another, fleeing Russian, Polish, and German armies who, each in their turn, plundered them, leaving the shtetls ravaged, impoverished, and even starving. The flight continued, some, with Zionist fervor, to Palestine; others to the safe haven of America. Some held back from this safe haven because of fears of the extinction of their distinct Jewish life and language. But the real extinction they could never have imagined—the Holocaust. |
