| Meer info | Shekhawati, a veritable museum of fresco art, is a region close to Delhi, on the way to Jaipur. The unique form of wall decoration practised at Shekhawati provides an excellent reference about social influences on artists commissioned by merchants to paint their mansions. Elaborately designed, the mansions, conform to the lifestyle of the age: the women are confined indoors, within an enclosed courtyard. Their only contact with the outside world, and their men who traded with lands as distant as Calcutta and Rangoon would be via the vivid and varied frescoes painted by the artists, telling them about a world they would probably never see! The artist commissioned to paint the mansions covered every inch of wall, ceiling, window, arch and column; his choice of subjects would range from the mythological and historical to floral arabesques, the fantastic and the absurd to the pervasive influence of the British, their customs and their new technology! Today the region is undergoing ceaseless flux. Paintings are being destroyed; castles and forts have been turned into hotels. A way of life has passed. This book attempts to recreate a pictorial history of the region, and pays tribute to the fresco artists for the unique living record they have left behind. |
