Meer info Born a Dane, Jens Jensen (1860— 1951) became one of America’s few great landscape artists. He came to the United States at the age of twenty-four and found in the Midwest a countryside reminiscent of the land around his father’s farm in Sleswig. Quickly at home in his new environment, he turned his talents in landscape design to developing a kind of democratic romanticism which stressed the use of native trees and plants and loyalty to the natural character of the terrain.
Jensen started his career in America by working for the West Side Park System of Chicago. Under him it was notably successful in achieving great beauty of design with maximum accessibility to all citizens. Jensen was instrumental in founding the numerous small neighborhood parks in Chicago, in addition to beautifying the larger parks. His Columbus Park in that city and the Lincoln Memorial Garden in Spring- field were masterpieces of American art, and the latter has been preserved as lie originally designed it. Thanks largely to Jensen’s zeal for conservation, Chicago has more wild land within easy reach of its citizens than any other large American city.
While few Chicagoans were conscious of landscape design when Jensen first came to the city, the climate was right for new artistic ideas. Jensen soon had many famous private

clients—Henry and Edsel Ford, Ogden Armour, Julius Rosemvald, Samuel Insull, Herman Paepcke, as well as others less affluent. His work for the Chicago parks coincided with the civic renaissance following the 1893 Columbian Exhibition, with the Burnham Plan of 1909, to whose formulation he contributed importantly, and with the architectural activities of Frank Lloyd Wright and the followers of Louis Sullivan. Wright called him a “nature poet,” a characterization which the photographs in this book amply illustrate.
