| Meer info | WOODBRIDGE is an ancient town which grew up around the Market Hill as an Anglo-Saxon settlement overlooking the lowest fordable crossing of the River Deben while across the valley, on the facing hilltop, is Sutton Hoo, the royal burial field of the East Anglian dynasty of the time. Trade and shipbuilding brought prosperity and the Augustinian Priory acquired the right to hold a market, but it was in Elizabethan times that Woodbridge began to boom, then the lawyer Thomas Seckford bought the manor. He threw his considerable management ability and personal wealth into making the town a commercial success and started several institutions to improve the lives of the townspeople. It was in Seckford’s time that the town took on the present shape and layout of narrow streets lined with timber-framed houses. Though many were later given a brick facade, especially in the Georgian period when the town led a large garrison. it is still possible to see the ancient timbers of the older town in the narrow driftways between the houses. Long the market centre for a wide district and a small shipbuilding port, Woodbridge attracted some small industries during the Victorian period and, more significantly, an increasing number of private residents who came to enjoy the pleasant life of the most attractive town in East Suffolk. Among those attracted by the beauty of the place were many fine early photographers, who have left behind a wide range of splendid pictures. The author has skilfully drawn upon this rich pictorial archive very effectively to help him to tell the story of the town, its past and its people and of the surrounding country area. His book will be widely welcomed, by visitors and residents alike. |
