Generally, however, such books adopt a less than rigorous approach to the actual historical origins of the tarot, preferring to shroud them in the mists of unimaginable antiquity. This book is different. It is the first to explain the structure and symbolism of the tarot trumps in the light of the themes — mythological, astrological, and philosophical — that preoccupied the age in which we now know the earliest cards were produced: the Italian Renaissance. Tarot was originally a game of cards that took the hierarchy of the universe for its theme, the sequence of trumps reflecting the grades of the cosmic order — the steps up the ladder of being. It was thus both a game and a systematic allegory of the universe as the fifteenth century saw it — a cosmos in miniature. For the first time what has become known as the major arcana of the tarot is analysed within its authentic historical context. John Shephard shows how the trump cards we have inherited from the Renaissance combine classical myth, religious symbolism, and poetic themes within a formal structure derived from medieval astrology — a potent blending of pagan and Christian archetypes typical of an age that itself mingled belief and scepticism.
