(...). LIWJATAN (Leviathan). Job Ch. 40 v. 25-31 (English version Ch. 41 v. 1-8) mentions Liwjatan, commonly supposed to be the crocodile. We cannot read the Hebrew text without observing that this conclusion remains open to many objections. The exegesis of the passage is hampered by the liberty taken by many translators in rendering affirmative sen- tenues as interrogatives. In doing soothed converted the meaning of the text completely and read in it the opposite of the statement of the author. (...)'. |
