'INTRODUCTION It is customary among the Protestant churches to consider their basis of 'sola scripture' antithetic to and excluding tradition. This is of course quite understandable in view of the protest the Reformation had to make against the Roman Catholic Church. On the other hand, however, if one considers that the various churches understand this scripture in different ways, the question can arise, whether in their express repudiation of tradition they are not unwittingly subject to a self deception.For their interpretation is, for the most part uncon- sciously, conditioned to a large extent by the Christian education and environment from which they come - that is, by the tradition (here used in the customary meaning of the word) of their particular denomination. A great part of the differences in exegesis among them is to be explained by different doctrinal presuppositions.
