| Meer info | A little intro to this studty. 'This kind of handbook on religion in Asia and the Middle East has three main goals. First it intends to provide an integrated and objective profile of the interaction of religions and societies in a number of countries of Asia the Middle East. Second it it is meant to encourage comparative and theoretical considerations by identifying not only certain patterns of interaction between religion and society in general but also those patterns which seem to be characteristic for each religion and can be studied through a variety of socio-cultural contexts. And third the book should provide,, as a result of the two aims just mentioned, a good scholarly introduction to the sociology of religion inn non-western countries. For this investigation, the two world religions of Islam and Buddhism have been singled out - with occasional references to Christianity - as well as Hinduism in India and Judaism in Israel. Altogether seventeen countries are treated, in eight of which Islam is of the various religions the dominating force, whereas Buddhism plays an importatnt role in seven other countries treated'. |
