| Meer info | Summary The training of architects looks back on long-standing and relatively uniform traditions; however, it is confronted with marked changes in the requirements to be met by graduates. Due to the narrow definition of the subject by existing schools, integrated approaches in the construction industry are hardly reflected in the training of architects. Moreover, further training is not mandatory for architects in Austria. Task Ecological aspects are either not included in existing curricula in force at institutions for training in architecture at all or incorporated to a very limited extent only. Due to international and national requirements and conventions (protocols on climatic protection, the Kyoto-Convention on Climatic Change, heat insulation provisions in building construction, Austrian standards etc.) planners need well-founded knowledge of connections in energy technology and of the consequences of their building plans. The minor competence of the majority of Austrian architects in energy efficient building and construction caused increasing ecological and economical impacts on the construction industry. Learning by doing methods applied by many architects cannot fill this gap. A structured and adequate continuing education is not offered by the professional representation of the Austrian Architects and lacks completely on university level. (...) A curriculum for postgraduate training in solar architecture is to be developed in accordance with the requirements under Austrian legislation on university studies. The thesis incorporates a presentation of the relevant subjects and examination rules. A new scientific based and integrative approach towards architectural education shall be achieved by the thesis. |
