Paper somewhat browned with occasional foxing; plates complete, see pictures. Bernard Nieuwentyt (1654?1718) was a Dutch philosopher, mathematician, physician, and theologian. A follower of Descartes and opponent of Spinoza, he engaged in debates on the foundations of infinitesimal calculus with Leibniz. Nieuwentyt's work aimed to demonstrate the existence of God through the observation of nature, contributing significantly to natural theology. This work comprises 23 contemplations on various aspects of the natural world, including human anatomy, sensory perception, meteorology, and astronomy. Nieuwentyt uses these observations to argue against atheism and unbelief, asserting that the complexity and order of nature provide evidence of divine creation.
