Meer info - Standard work on the use of coinage and currency in Roman Britain, particularly focusing on how coins were used in economic, political, and social contexts following the Roman conquest in 43 AD and traces its development throughout the Roman occupation, that ended in 410 AD. It covers the various types of coins used in Roman Britain, including denarii, sestertii, and local coinage minted by Roman authorities and British tribal leaders and describes how Roman Britain integrated with the wider Roman economic system. Carol Humphrey Vivian Sutherland, CBE, (1908-1986) was an English numismatist. In 1932 he became an assistant keeper in the Heberden Coin Room at the Ashmolean Museum, and from 1939 he also lectured in numismatics at the University of Oxford. He was appointed keeper of the coin room in 1957 and retired in 1975. He significantly shaped the way scholars think about the role of coinage not just as a medium of exchange but as a tool of imperial control. The introduction of coinage into Roman Britain helped to reinforce Roman authority, and SutherlandÂ’s analysis of the subject has often been used in university courses on Roman history and archaeology.
