| Meer info | - Study on burgage tenure, a form of landholding in medieval England and Scotland, primarily found in towns (or boroughs). It was a system where townspeople, known as burgesses, held land or property from the king or a lord in exchange for a fixed annual rent or service. Unlike feudal agricultural land, burgage plots were small, usually arranged in rows along a street, and used for houses, shops, or workshops. Instead of military service or agricultural labor (as in other feudal tenures), tenants paid a fixed money rent to the landlord, typically the king or a local lord. Burgage tenure was often inheritable and could be bought, sold, or transferred relatively freely, contributing to the rise of a merchant class. Many towns with burgage tenure developed borough charters, granting them local self-government, market rights, and representation in Parliament. |
