Meer info - Île de Ré, located off the western coast of France, was strategically important for trade and defense. During the Middle Ages and early modern period (12th-17th centuries), it was governed by local lords but remained under the sovereignty of the French king. The island was sometimes granted privileges due to its role in salt production and maritime trade. Seigneurial Charters (Chartes seigneuriales) were documents that defined the rights and duties of local feudal lords (seigneurs). They regulated aspects such as taxation, land management, justice, and the relationship between the lord and the local population. Royal Privileges were special rights or exemptions granted by French kings to the island and its inhabitants. They could include trade benefits, tax exemptions, self-governance rights, or military protection (especially against English invasions in the 16th and 17th centuries). During the Wars of Religion and under King Louis XIII (early 17th century), Île de Ré was fortified to protect it from Protestant uprisings and foreign invasions.
