| Meer info | - In December 1974, the Salon Sztuki Wspólczesnej in Lódz hosted a solo exhibition by Polish artist Ryszard Winiarski (1936-2006) titled Próby wizualnej prezentacji rozkladów statystycznych (Attempts of Visual Presentation of Statistical Distributions). This exhibition showcased Winiarski's innovative approach to integrating mathematical concepts, particularly probability and statistics, into visual art. Winiarski, trained in both precision mechanics and fine arts, developed a unique artistic methodology that combined deterministic programming with elements of chance. He employed black and white squares arranged on grids, where the placement of each square was determined by random processes such as dice rolls or coin tosses. This approach resulted in artworks that were objective and devoid of personal expression, emphasizing the process over the final aesthetic outcome. Winiarski referred to these works as "areas" rather than traditional paintings, highlighting their conceptual foundation. The exhibition catalog, published by Biuro Wystaw Artystycznych in Lódz, featured several black-and-white illustrations of the exhibited works, a list of exhibitions, and critical commentary on Winiarski's practice. It served not only as documentation of the exhibition but also as an extension of Winiarski's exploration into the visual representation of statistical data. With François Morellet Winiarski shared a deep commitment to system-based, rule-governed abstraction in art. Their works exhibit striking conceptual parallels, particularly in the use of chance, mathematics, and structure - linking them within the broader currents of constructivism, minimalism, and conceptual art. Winiarski and Morellet can be seen as parallel innovators in systematic abstraction. The catalog is considered a significant artifact in the study of conceptual and constructivist art of the 1970s. |
