This collection of black-and-white nude, kinbaku (bondage), and street photography by the Japanese erotic photographer Nobuyoshi Araki (b. 1940) includes a brief biography of the artist, list of exhibitions and publications from 1965 to 1990, and an essay "Life and Death Photography" by Gijs Van Tuyl. Published as a showpiece for the Araki exhibit at Germany's Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Tokyo Novelle is a fine impression of the artist's on going a-moral portait of Tokyo. This time, however, the Godzilla myth figures prominently, with lizards and plastic figurines showing up in the midst of Araki's familiar city scapes and bound, confrontational nudes. Tokyo Novelle also includes an informative biography of the artist. |
