Museum exhibition catalog.
On view are some 160 artifacts and artworks that present the cultural achievements of Timur or Tamerlane, the Asian emperor whose military conquests reshaped the social, political, and cultural climate of large parts of Iran and Central Asia during the 15th century. Highlights include the earliest known suit of Islamic mail and plate armor in iron and gold, a sandlewood box, and a 15th-century cloud collar. Featured are paintings, metalwork, ceramics, calligraphies, jade, carvings, wood carvings, textiles, and illuminated manuscripts. The objects exhibited are on loan from various public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Topkapi Palace Museum and the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum, both located in Istanbul, Turkey; the Egyptian National Library, Cairo; the British Library, London; the State Hermitage Museum, Leningrad, USSR; and the USSR State Treasury, Moscow.

This book shows illuminated manuscripts, paintings, drawings, ceramics, metalwork, and jade, stone, and wood carvings displayed in a large exhibition of Timurid art and artefacts.

Review:
When this book was published, very few images of Timurid illustrations were available, so the book provided an essential service. Since then, a number of museums, especially in Britain, have provided digitized images of important texts. Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this title. It is the best combination of a scholarly text and a high-quality illustrated exhibition guide available in this field. For those interested in a general introduction to the arts, decorative arts, and life in Timurid Central Asia, something everyone should know about! I highly recommend this book.
