With this goal in mind, the authors of the new one-volume edition of this highly successful textbook present a detailed account of each step involved in carrying out a research study, from the selection and formulation of the research problem to the analysis and in- terpretation of the results. All the important features of the origi- nal edition have been retained, and the text has been brought up to date by the use of recent studies as illustrations and by the inclusion of new developments in methodology, such as the Q-sort and semantic differential. The emphasis which the earlier edition placed on prejudice has been reduced, making room for a much greater variety of illustrative materials. More material on formulating hypotheses, defining con- cepts, and establishing working defini- tions has been included and a new chapter on the research report and several appendixes have been added. The chapter on research design has been made into two chapters to discuss more fully "exploratory and descriptive studies" and "studies testing causal hypotheses." Finally, material on techniques from Volume II of the 1951 edition has been integrated in the chapters on data collection and the use of data as source material, and in the Appendices. |
