| Meer info | Nicolò [Niccolò] Pasquali (c. 1717 - 1757), musician and actor, was born in Cosenza, Italy. According to Burney he came to London about 1743 and from then on was extremely active in the three main British musical centers. Much of Pasquali's music is no longer extant. His few surviving works suggest the influence of Handel and reveal a great deal of natural ability, and may have influenced William Boyce. He made his most enduring impact, however, through theoretical writings. The figured-bass teaching manual Thorough-Bass Made Easy, published in Edinburgh in 1757, achieved unusual success for a pedagogical work in English during this period, appearing in at least four further British editions (including nineteenth- and twentieth-century examples) and, most significantly, translations into French and Dutch (published in Amsterdam). It contains excellent advice which is still of value, e.g. on different ways to break chords when accompanying recitative. In retrospect it seems to be Pasquali's most important achievement. |
