| Meer info | The Cult of Violence focuses on the intellectual and political movements inspired by the writings and activities of the French theorist and revolutionary Georges Sorel (1847- 1922). This study of Sorel's apocalyptic politics demonstrates how the need for a drastic and total renovation of the social order-in which Sorel's conception of violence played a crucial role, became the center of his thought and action and that of his following. After an extended evolution, in the course of which Sorel became convinced of the decadence of France, he began a search for extremist movements that would be capable of politico-spiritual conquest, such as revolutionary syndicalism, monarchism, and nationalism, as well as post-World War I bolshevism and fascism. Although his views underwent important evolution over two decades, his basic conception of the role of violence remained substantially unaltered. The impact of Sorel's thought and action initiated in France and especially in Italy a "cult of violence," variegated and changing yet identifiable and significant, which continued after his death. |
