His books on his travels in East Asia where perhaps he traveled on the last caravan on the Silk Road are wonderful armchair traveler books. His life's story however, gets caught up in the politics of China as we "lost" China to the Communists. He became the #1 target of the McCarthy and McCarren committees in their public hearing rooting out Americans who were branded as Communist sympathizers. This is an encyclopedic history of his life, and the details are sometimes too dense. The book, however, is fascinating and relevant to our times, and the dangers of judgement by rumors. I greatly enjoyed this book, although I had to read it in bits and parts. |
