IV: (2), half title, frontispiece portrait, title, (2), 338 pages, folding table. Scattered foxing. In 1832 Lamartine, the famous French poet, left for the Holy Land with his wife and daughter. Lamartine had in that period, after all, dropped off from overly formal Catholicism and tended to the ideas of Lamennais. The journey to Palestine was thus intended to deepen his loyalty to the Church. However, the trip did not have the expected result. By visiting the Holy Sepulcher and the death of his daughter Julia in Beirut, Lamartine completely gave up religious practice. Translation of “Voyage en Orient” (1835). |
