| Meer info | Le Vaillant went to the Cape of Good Hope in 1780 for the Dutch East India Company. He made three journeys, one around Cape Town and Saldanha Bay, one eastwards from the Cape and the third to the Orange River and into Great Namaqualand. During the first expedition his collection was on the Middelburg which was attacked and sunk by the English in Saldanha bay. "This work was attacked when published, and some of the incidents related were declared to be either exaggerated or altogether invented". "Interesting as an account of South Africa at a time when comparatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers". |
